Working to improve the social, emotional, mental health and wellbeing of children and young people in Cornwall

Welcome to the Wellbeing Newsletter

Welcome to the Wellbeing Update.

Summer Safety Wellbeing Special!

After what seems an eternity this term is finally coming to end.

An interesting time to publish the new guidance on Relationships and Sex Education. Timing aside it is good to see the Guidance and the clarity it brings in some areas, which were of concern in the hiatus.

We’re delighted to see emphasis on helping children understand safety and ways of staying safe, help-seeking behaviours and social & emotional learning (coping skills and strategies, resilience, and understanding emotions). The content on online safety is encouraging, promoting skills of online safety and awareness, to be critical consumers of the messages they receive online, as well as develop digital resilience.

We and colleagues feel in a good position to support schools in the new school year through current work / resources (although schools have until September 2026 to adapt to reflect this new guidance).

Brilliant ME! (NEW SEL resource coming in September)

Digital Resilience resources

Protective Behaviours support / Strategies for Safety and Wellbeing

The Resilience Framework and more!

Look out for details in September.

Summer Safety Planning

While many children look forward to the summer break, for some, it can mean greater risk. Without school’s routine, supervision, and daily support, pupils who are currently more vulnerable may face unsafe or unpredictable environments. Encourage pupils to develop simple, age-appropriate safety plans.

These could include:

  • Emergency contacts and safe places: who to go to and where to go if they feel unsafe.
  • Daily structure: encouraging attendance at holiday clubs or activities to reduce isolation.
  • Online and home safety: discussing risks and agreeing strategies, such as code words or safe online use.
  • Access to food or support: signposting local schemes or services, including helplines.
  • Planned check-ins: setting up regular contact with a known adult where possible.

Our feeling, staying safe web page can help.:

  • a one-minute safety plan,
  • getting help image that can be saved to their ‘phone.
  • feeling safe, staying safe quick guide

My Summer Toolbox – booklet (Barnardo’s)

The purpose of this booklet is for children (ages 6 - 12) to learn skills and coping tools that can help them to self-regulate when there are challenges or difficult days.

There are a range of weekly activities and exercises, including a ‘try and score’ section for children to identify what works well for them and what can support them.
